Twenty years after the famous Berlin wall came down; the city is unrecognizable from its former divided time. Now a heady mix of gritty urbanism and modern glitz, the busy streets teem with life and color. Many visit for a culture-filled city break to this historical city, where Berlin luxury hotel and spas, art galleries, museums, underground clubs, gourmet food emporiums and bustling markets all vie for attention. It's a perfect spot for all tastes and interests; on the edge of fashion, music, food, modern culture and entertainment and also with a fascinating, ancient history that's well worth exploring.
Berlin's emergence has been unstoppable since the infamous wall came down and many now compare it to New York's energy of the 1980's. Now the city has an incredible atmosphere of experimentation, tolerance and welcome and a very edgy 'unfinished' feel which makes it eternally cool. It's also a city of cheap rental properties and the streets throng with students. It's a remarkable achievement for a city so steeped in difficult history; previously bombed, made a fascist headquarter, a site of revolution, of division and finally unity, its more ancient history is no less intriguing. Like many European cities there are also visible nods to historical moments etched into buildings, roads, signs and more - and visitors can explore much of its past even away from the museums and guide-books. Head to the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and Checkpoint Charlie to breathe in the past, as well as checking out the remains of the Berlin Wall.
Berlin is also a lively party town, with huge numbers of underground clubs, lively bars, all night cafes and plenty of live music. This doesn't clog up the rest of the city though, which has fantastic transportation systems, well priced facilities, lovely open spaces and a feeling of safety and freedom. It's easy to travel around, whether by bus or metro and parking is easy if you have a hire car. People often seem to be friendlier than in other capital cities and the people-watching opportunities are wonderful for those who like to stop at a terrace cafe with a coffee and a pair of dark glasses to nosey at passing crowds! Prices are surprisingly competitive for such a large city and many visitors decide to splash out on little treats such as a Berlin luxury hotel or posh restaurant experience during their stay.
Other particular attractions include the TV tower, which is the tallest building in Germany and offers amazing birds-eye views of the surroundings. Catch the latest in contemporary art at the Hamburger Banhof, located in a former train station and home to many famous pieces. A cabaret show is a great experience at the Bar jeder Vernunft, taking you back to the infamous roaring twenties! Potsdamer Platz is also very popular, with a good ice-rink and the famous party-palace of Cookies is home to incredible cocktails and many a celebrity spot!
Berlin has a cool climate and is good to visit year round. Summer temperatures rise to around 75 degrees and spring is a beautiful time to see the sights. The festival calendar also tends to dictate many a visit date and there are occasions all year round - everything from festivals, music shows, concerts, street parties, film, beer and food festivals and much, much more. It's best to be organized around this time, as it can make hotel rooms hard to book, particularly if you are looking for the most central Berlin luxury hotel or spas, high-end city-center hotels, or even the more budget options, but with excellent locations. It's best to book in advance and avoid being disappointed and online sites are ideal for comparing offers and availability.
In terms of flights, it's just a short couple of hours from the UK to Berlin and the airport - Berlin-Schönefeld Airport - is located on the end of Schönefeld, on Berlin's southern border and around 11 miles to the city center's south east. It's a busy airport with good facilities and transfers, which include taxis, buses, coaches and hire cars and which can all be organized beforehand or at the booking kiosks in departures.
All in all, Berlin is a great city to visit for a city break, or for longer and many visitors do fall in love with its unique atmosphere and decide to return, or use Berlin as a base for exploring Germany's other many attractions.
